The 1+1=11 project
Over the last 18 months, a small group of women in Bristol from Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani backgrounds have been meeting to think about conflict. As one said recently: 'I think this work is very valuable, bringing this subject into the open with everyone’s different views'. Over that time, the project has explored:
- phrases, language and proverbs used to talk about conflict - or if in a fight – in Punjabi, Bangla and Urdu
- the different types of daily conflict people experience and the key dilemmas they present
- sample case studies to illustrate types of conflicts that come up and how they are dealt with
- key barriers to resolution when conflicts arise
- barriers to accessing help with conflict situations
- possible ways forward.
The 1+1=11 project takes its name from the Punjabi proverb ‘1+1 = 11’, meaning if you are alone with a problem, talk to someone. As soon as you do, it feels as if you have 10 people on your side.
